The region of Les Cayes in Haiti

Les Cayes is a town and seaport in the Southwest of Haiti founded in 1786. It is also known by some other names like Aux Cayes or Cayes. The area where the town is located was uninhabited until the French colonial administration founded the town of Aux Cayes. Although the region is still under some development programs by Haiti tourism, its appealing landmarks include several historic forts and arsenal dating from the days of buccaneers and corsairs. Les Cayes was destroyed twice by hurricane in 1781 and 1786. It was further plagued by disease and pirates during the colonial periods. In recent times, the town was badly damaged by hurricanes in 1958 and by fire in 1908. Les Cayes witnessed the massacre of December 1929 when U.S. Marine killed a dozen farmers who protested the poor economic condition under U.S. occupation. more »

Discover Central Plateau in Haiti

The "Central Plateau" occupies about 390 square km (150 square miles) area in an interior basin in Haiti and its adjacent San Juan Valley in the Dominican Republic. The Central Plateau which is also known as the Centre department, extends along both sides of the Guayamouc River, south of the Massif du Nord. It runs about eighty five kilometers from southeast to northwest and is thirty kilometers wide. The plateau has an average elevation of 300 meters or 1,000 feet with an access through difficult spiral roads. Central Plateau is bounded by two minor mountain ranges to the south and west by Noires and Cahos Mountains respectively. Ile de la Tortue in Haiti or Tortuga Island

Tortue Island hosts 2 km long 'Pointe Ouest' one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Sailing on the emerald glass water for a few hours is a bliss; the white color beach with towering mountains behind, never seems to end. "Tortuga" is the Spanish word for 'turtle' and the island was named so by Christopher Columbus because the shape reminded him of a turtle's shell who discovered it during his first voyage on December 6, 1492. Welcome to Cotes de Fer, Haiti

Côtes-de-Fer is located on a 190.36 square km area in the Southeast of Haiti. The place also nicknamed by "coast of beauty" is surrounded by 'Bainet' on the east, the borough of Aquin & Miragoâne on the west, and Petit-Goâve and the Caribbean Sea on the north and south respectively. It lies at the mouth of the River Côtes-de-Fer, which forms the boundary with the Southern Department.

The area with its 70,000 population has six rural sections-- Gris-gris, Labiche, Amazon, Bras de Gauche, Boucan Bellier and Jamais Vue. The inhabitants mainly live on fishing. Here, you can find large varieties of season fish, lobsters and conchs. In the mountain area they grow large quantities of cachiment, corossole, mango, papaya, grenadine, sapodilla, etc. Agricultural products like banana, potato, corn, petit mille, peas, yam and cassava are grown for local consumption. more »

Last Saturday, Police in Haiti took into custody Rony Timothy. He was charged with disturbing public order as well as fire set in a vehicle and a gas station in the Haitian Capital.

Is the new Government in Haiti operating illegally?

If you believe the opposition, you will think so. According to Senator Francois Anick Joseph and with the support of many of his collegues, The current government just formed by Primer Minister Laurent Lamothe is inconstitutional and does not exist.

They are saying that there is no government in the country. Why?

Here is where the problem is. The Presidential Decree that was issued to form the new government on 2 April had some contradictions. Instead of announcing in the decree that some ministers resigned, instead it stated that the Cabinet of Ministers resigned. more »
