Discover La Vallee Jacmel, Haiti
La Vallée de Jacmel is the name of the touristic sea-side city of Jacmel, located in the southeastern department of Haiti. It is an independent peaceful village with an own rich history and culture. The center of the village is dominated by its parish church, hospital and schools. Most of the locals or 'Valléens' have long root with La Vallée and boast one of the highest literacy rates in the country and it is a home to some lesser known centenarians. The people are hospitable, courteous, hard working and disciplined. They enjoy and feel proud to deliver most of the public services and amenities.
La Vallée de Jacmel although the name literally means 'the Valley of Jacmel" is actually situated 800 meters above sea level between the municipalities of Jacmel et Bainet. The place started gaining importance in 1910 with the creation of a parish. Léon Bonnaud was the first resident priest of the parish from Brittany France. He played a major role in the development of the area surrounding through the construction of the first masonry accommodations. As a result of his initial effort, one after another developments came in to effect: the Presbytery was composed in 1912, the St John the Baptist parish church was completed in 1922, 'Ecole Léonce Mégie' the boy's school was completed in 1926 which was followed by the inauguration of girls' school 'école St Paul' in 1931 shortly after his departure.

After spending a week in Grand Goave helping build new homes, I left with a Lifetime gift from the Haitian people: To accept what Life hands you, deal with it sans any self-pity, and live as a family of Man.
