Discover Saint Louis du Nord in Haiti

Saint-Louis-du-Nord also known as Sen Lwi dinò in Haitian Creole is a town in the arrondissement of Saint-Louis du Nord in the Nord Ouest department of Haiti. It is also known in Haitian Creole as "Sen Lwi dinò". The town is located on the northern peninsula of the Hispaniola Island near the Tortuga Island and Port-de-Paix. The coastal town with an average elevation of one meter (average elevation of Haiti is 13 meters) above the sea level is inhabited by 73,100 residents. The Haitian capital Port-au-Prince is located 98 miles away in the Southeast. The nearest reliable airport is at Cap Haitien, 37 miles away. The town is 2 miles away from the powerful Atlantic Ocean.

The coasts of Tortuga Island are clearly visible from Saint-Louis-du-Nord. Tortuga and other islands in this area were once the homes of buccaneers and corsairs (pirates who used to attack Spanish ships in the 17th century). Tortuga Island was a free port, a lawless place, outside the jurisdiction of the East India Trading Company and Royal Navy where the traders could freely trade evade high tariffs levied by them. Even today, Tortuga Island is a hot spot for smuggling in the U.S. and ironically by its nature, has become the ideal location to shoot the modern-day film, "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Saint-louis Du Nord, the most beautiful town in Northwest Haiti

Saint Louis du Nord has always been the home of the diehard intrepid revolutionaries. During the decisive battle of February 19, 1802, the town was held as a buffer from the north, shielding Capoix headquartered in Laveaux-Lapointe.
