The region of Les Cayes in Haiti
Les Cayes is a town and seaport in the Southwest of Haiti founded in 1786. It is also known by some other names like Aux Cayes or Cayes. The area where the town is located was uninhabited until the French colonial administration founded the town of Aux Cayes. Although the region is still under some development programs by Haiti tourism, its appealing landmarks include several historic forts and arsenal dating from the days of buccaneers and corsairs. Les Cayes was destroyed twice by hurricane in 1781 and 1786. It was further plagued by disease and pirates during the colonial periods. In recent times, the town was badly damaged by hurricanes in 1958 and by fire in 1908. Les Cayes witnessed the massacre of December 1929 when U.S. Marine killed a dozen farmers who protested the poor economic condition under U.S. occupation.
