New design for Port-au-Prince Cathedral to be revealed soon

Donations from Governors and other individuals reach $200,000 to rebuild the Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption in Port-Au-Prince.

The actual design for the new Port-au-Prince Cathedral is expected to be revealed to the public within the next few weeks.

As you may remember, during the 2010 Earthquake, the roof and the towers flanking the main entrance of Port-au-Prince Cathedral collapsed. The earthquake also destroyed the nunciature and the archdiocesan offices, killing Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot and Vicar General Charles Benoit.

It took 40 years to build Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption in Port-Au-Prince and in 30 seconds, it was gone.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption is considered to be the Spirit of Port-Au-Prince. You can't get lost in the city; you can see it from anywhere. The Cathedral even helped with marine navigation, used as a lighthouse for guiding mariners into Port-au-Prince harbor.

The charm and beauty exhibited by this building in the middle of Port-au-Prince is out of this world. The beautiful art glass windows of the Port au Prince Cathedral are century-old.

In March 2012, the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince launched an international design competition with many architects submitting plans and suggestions on how to rebuild cathedral. The selection is underway with the final selection to be publicized later this month.
