Haiti Free Trade Agreement a Bad Move Clinton Acknowledges

Bill Clinton has admitted, forcing Haiti to sign a free trade agreement was a blunder. Ex-Haitian President Aristide was instructed to cut back rice import tariffs to 3%, resulting in the loss of the agricultural community's livelihoods.

Clinton erroneously believed limiting domestic production would switch Haiti to an industrial economy. But it backfired. Clinton realizes it is more helpful to send seeds, fertilizers, and machinery to return Haiti to its agrarian roots.
