When Haiti defeated its French occupier ruler in 1804 to become the first black republic in the world and abolish slavery, enslavement was still thriving in Venezuela under Spanish rule and also to some other countries in the Latin America. On December 15, 1815, after the defeat in Carthagena to the Spaniards, Simon Bolivar, the revolutionary leader of Venezuela sought help from Alexandre Petion who was one of the founding fathers of Haiti. Bolivar was desperately looking for a place of refuge and help. He founded both in Haiti. Alexandre Petion supplied Simon Bolivar money and men, and supported him to resume his struggle. This is a little known fact, but it has not been forgotten by the Venezuelans. The country has erected a statue of Alexandre Pétion, the first President of Haiti, in a public place in their capital city Caracas among their national heroes.
