On February 7, 2016, Michel Martelly departed his office at the end of his five-year term (14 May 2011 - 7 February 2016) leaving his responsibility, by a last minute agreement, to the interim, provisional president Jocelerme Privert. Michel Martelly, a former pop star, in his farewell message, spoke before the lawmakers in French and Creole. He thanked those who accompanied him, defended his family against accusations of embezzlement. He said, people will remember that once there was a certain Michel Joseph Martelly who loved, gave, and built. He also acknowledged that "history will recall my failures, for which I take sole responsibility, among them the most important failure would be the delay of presidential elections." He handed over the presidential slash to the National Assembly President Jocelerme Privert, later who became the new Provisional President to substitute Martelly on 14 February 2016.
