A Tribute to Max Beauvoir in Champ de Mars.

Max Gesner Beauvoir, the "Ati" or supreme leader of Haiti's traditional Afro-Caribbean religion 'Voodoo', died on September 12, 2015, at the age of 79. He has lamented the fact that voodoo "has long been misunderstood, stigmatized and demonized." He was a chemist from City College of New York (1958), a biochemist from the Sorbonne (1962) and had worked as a biochemist at Cornell Medical Center till his return to Haiti in the early 1970s. President Michel Martelly has described his death as a "great loss for the country". In a somber environment, a 'national tribute' was arranged on 16 September at the Champ de Mars. Many officials and dignitaries representing Haiti's different religions paid tribute to the "rare unifying genius." Recently, Prime Minister Evans Paul has said, Beauvoir had united bishops, Protestant pastors and Muslim imams to launch religions which can foster peace through dialogue in difficult times. Roman Catholic Bishop Pierre-Andre Dumas has described him as a brave man who fought for respect, tolerance, and honor of our ancestral values.
