Fermathe, Haiti
Fermathe is a small town located up in the mountains above in the south part of Port-au-Prince. Its nearest airport is 14.4 km away at the Toussaint Louverture International in the capital city. It is 13 km above Petionville.
The main attraction in Fermathe is Fort Jacques. The fort was erected during the burst of fort building following the declaration of independence on January 1, 1804. The fort was built by Alexandre Pétion who led the mulatto troops of the French Army and named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1801 constitution. The fort was slightly damaged in the 2010 earthquake. The admission fee for the fort is HTG 25; it is open between sunrise and sunset.

The ruined Fort Alexandre is a short walk away in Fermathe. It is named Alexander in honor of Alexandre Pétion who was the man behind building them. These forts were the instances of fortification of defensive system developed by the Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines to check the return of the French after the independence. The forts were built high on the hilltops surrounding the town of Kenscoff and Fermathe.
